A big, exciting change occurred in our lives this past weekend. A few days ago, I filled out an application after finding an adorable pup via petfinder.com. Lo and behold (we’ve done this several times before to no avail), we were called back by the lady who runs the shelter, who referred us to the foster mom for the dog we’d seen. Fast forward two nights, many questions about our family, lifestyle, home setup etc. and a drive down to Westfield, MA later and we were allowed to bring our new puppy Ali home.

Ali is a joyous addition to our family and we are all completely smitten. Well, the cats are still surveying the scene from a distance, but all humans who’ve come into contact with Ali in our little town are hooked.

Ali has been a great puppy so far. They think she’s some kind of newfoundland dog mix, and that she’ll grow up to be quite a big dog. She was rescued from a house raid in Mississippi, brought to a shelter and taken in by a foster family, all in the last 3 weeks. She’s only about 10 weeks old, so she’s had a rough start to her life. With each hour, though, she’s gaining confidence and her personality definitely sparkles through when she romps in the snow, sees other dogs or meets toddlers. She’s a sweetheart, easy as can be to take care of right now, and already firmly planted in the center of our family.

Here she is at her foster family’s home when we went to pick her up.

About to head for her new home

In the car on the way home…

Loving the snow piled up on our property

Slowly getting acquainted with the cats

Stealing Joe’s heart completely

We’re so excited for our future with you, Ali!

I’ll be the first to admit that I probably talk as though I am older than I actually am, particularly around my younger sisters. They’re 8 and 10 years younger than I am. A veritable generation younger. Sometimes I feel like Dr. Evil: “I’m hip, I’m cool. I’m with it,” - though I try to use reverse psychology: “I’m not hip, I’m not cool, I’m definitely not with it.” Then I wait, expectantly, for them to reassure me: “no, no! You ARE cool and with it!” Which we all know is a lie.

However, every now and then, my grandmotherly habits (e.g. knitting) are actually in line with the revived interest in handmade, “indie” arts. So I was especially pleased when my sister liked these fingerless gloves I made for her. The other little sister even requested her own pair.

The pattern was a simple ribbed spiral, quick and easy to knit. From Joelle Hoversen’s Last Minute Knitted Gifts, again. You know it’s a great book when you enjoy making multiple patterns from it! I used Rowan’s Cashsoft DK yarn, which makes these wrist warmers super soft and comfy to wear. My only problem with wrist warmers is the relative heat conundrum: my wrists and palms feel so nice and cozy that my fingers begin to feel cold in comparison.

A 3rd Birthday Present

M. turns three on Monday. How time flies! Of course, she’s quite the little girl these days, instead of a toddler.

When I was in California a few weeks ago, I was sitting on the couch knitting fingerless gloves for my sisters. M asked me: “Yiyi [“auntie” in Chinese] what are you sewing?”

Me: “I’m not sewing, I’m knitting. In sewing you use just one tiny needle, in knitting you use these bigger needles, see?”

Her: “Yiyi, what are you knee-ting?”

Me: “I’m knitting gloves for Xiao Ayi [“little aunt,” what M calls my youngest sister]. Remember I knit you a dress last year?”

Her: “Ya.”

Me: “Would you like me to knit you something this year?”

Her: “Yiyi, can you kneet me a teddy bear?”

Me: “Okay, M, I’ll think about it!”

M suffers from the misfortune of being born just two weeks after Christmas. This means that by the time her birthday rolls around, many of us have not recovered from present-shopping fatigue. Of course, when I’m getting her Christmas presents, I don’t choose which one of two or three presents might be best for Christmas, and which would be good for her birthday. I get them all for her for Christmas. One thing at which I’m absolutely, positively terrible is waiting to give people presents once I’ve acquired them. It almost killed me to hide a sweater I’d purchased for Joe for several months until Christmas one year.

So when it came time to figure out what to get her for her birthday, knowing that she’d just been inundated with toys for Christmas, I was rather at a loss. Then I remembered her sweet and random request. How did she know that teddy bears could even be knit? If you’d asked me a few years ago, I’d say they couldn’t. But obviously they were knit at some point back in the day, before machines and make-a-bear chain stores took over. I remembered a pattern I’d seen in Joelle Hoversen’s excellent book Last Minute Knitted Gifts.

It was Sunday evening, and I’d have to mail her present out by Tuesday for it to make it to California in time for this weekend, when she’s having her birthday party. I raided my small stash of yarn for some suitable materials. Last year, I’d started making cool gloves for Joe; they have a little flap for your thumb so that you can just have your thumbs out to text or use your touch screen phone. I’d started making them as a surprise for Joe. Making something that’s supposed to fit someone, well, like a glove, is difficult if you can’t measure them. Suffice it to say that I miscalculated and ended up with fingers that were too stubby and an arm that looked more like one the length of a dishwashing glove. It was comical. So I decided to steal the yarn from that failed project for this bear.

It worked out beautifully! The teddy bear is oh-so-soft and cuddly. If you look closely at its left cheek, you can see a little dimple I accidentally created when weaving in the yarn ends. I talk a bit more about making this project on my ravelry account.

All that remain of Joe’s gloves are the poor little dismembered fingers. So sad.

Tap tap tap... is this thing still on?

So we’ve been gone for a little while. A little 8 month while. I was surprised to come back to find that tumblr hasn’t deactivated this account, after my having let it… “lie fallow,” shall we say, for so long! A new year, a new resolution: post just a little more often in the next 8 months than I did in the last 8! Doable. Just the way I like my resolutions!

To be fair, I did warn anyone listening early on that I might be capable of this kind of start-off-strong-but-drop-off-badly behavior. Nonetheless, my guilty conscience wants to explain a bit about what we have been up to in the interim that has kept us somewhat otherwise occupied…

Ooh! Devious use of the jump (for those of you that can see it). Nope, the slumbering bundle of joy in my arms is not what we’ve been up to, though, gosh, enough time has elapsed that such an accomplishment could’ve been possible! No, that’s my nephew L who did arrive since I last posted, by dint of my sister (and James’) efforts, not mine. He and I were both exhausted the day after the wedding.

Without further ado, a glimpse into what’s been happening these past 8 months, i.e. a preview of what I might post about in the coming months….

Yardwork

Joe labored long and hard this summer to tame our wild yard…

From a tangled, cramped space…

To grounds befitting a wedding ceremony:

Home Renovations

Walls have been torn down, walls have been put up, a bathroom installed, flooring reworked, windows added… and we’re not even done with the half of it! Expect much on this topic in posts to come.

3 Weddings

A blissful year for my extended family… my cousin Kay got married in Brooklyn. I’ve never seen a wedding crowd and the happy couple dance so long and hard!

My cousin Ada got married in SF, and stunned us all with a touching ceremony and a HOT lil’ dance number. (Sorry to disappoint with no pics of said dance number.)

And Joe’s “brother” Chris and our favorite Jessy got married on a stupefyingly gorgeous Napa mountainside.

Well, make that 4 weddings

We got hitched.

(Photo by an amazing photographer Kevin Bubriski)

Actually, 5, kinda

And made it even more official with a small banquet in Taipei.

And we made some things

Some quilting

Some chili oil and apple butter

Some baking…

Imperfect experiments with fondant

Good old Christmas cookies

Some knitting

Stuff, basically.

We engaged in some travel, and craziness, in general.

Now that our furniture has arrived, we get to slowly unpack. I can’t decide what I like less - packing or unpacking. Probably packing… at least with unpacking we get to take our time. We have piles of boxes like this in most rooms of the house. Fun.

But with the arrival of our things, a few firsts were enabled.

First night on our own bed in the new house.

This was very much an upgrade. Here’s what we had before:

Though that picture is misleading. It shows an air mattress with air in it. A few hours into each night, there’d be very little air left in the leaky thing. This was not as much a problem for me as it was for Joe: he weighs more than I do and thus would hit the floor first, buoying me up for the next hour or two.

First time playing on my childhood piano in about… gosh, close to 15 years?

First moment of “oh no… did we do the right thing?” when the weather forecast told us the high today was in the mid 40s (that’s ~10 Celsius). And when we saw the little ice sprinklies coming down this morning. It’s MAY!!! :(

First shrugging of the shoulders and saying: “New England weather…” so unpredictable! Our honeymoon period here is not over yet! Luckily our down jackets were nearby.

First time using our kitchen

This was quite momentous for us. We had to thoroughly clean and salvage most of the appliances for our kitchen. Fridge, dishwasher, range… all came from various parts of our property (have I mentioned we own a duplex with a huge barn?)

First meal at Home

If we look tired, it’s because we are. My first week of work was tiring! And Joe has been going nonstop lugging things around the house, from the barn to one side of the duplex, from one side of the duplex to the other, with trips to Home Depot in between appointments with cable guys, locksmiths, contractors etc.! We’re also looking extra glam in our hoodies… crawling into small spaces and scrubbing kitchen shelves will do that to ya! But we were happy to have a meal at home. And to have found various utensils, our candles and even our wine bottle opener by rummaging through a few of our boxes. Thank goodness for detailed labeling!

Oh, and this is the first post uploaded from Home. We’re online again. Phew!

Comments

We've Moved!

It’s been a busy few weeks but we’ve landed in our new home. I’ve started a new job. We’ve acquired a new car. And a new house. More details to come… but for now, a quick glance at how it happened.

First there was this:

(Joe attempting to work while I slowly close in on him with moving boxes…)

Then there was this:

And this:

And this:

(yes, that’s our couch in our driveway)

But it was worth it, because of this:

And even this:

(ever tried moving cross country with 3 cats? We’ve done it twice now. Planes, automobiles… yowling. Not too much yowling, though.)

And then a whole lot of this:

And even a little of this:

(why yes, that is a washing machine being rolled down a dirt driveway)

With some of this:

Finally, we got to celebrate all the “this”s

And are now happily ensconced in our new home. Our furniture arrived from the West Coast today, so there will be more pictures forthcoming. This is about to turn into a home renovation, moving in blog! :)

We’ll post pictures of our progress… but would much prefer for you to come check it out in person!

Make appointments on week days if at all possible. My cousin said she tried to go to Kleinfeld but they were booked for months on weekends. I was able to make an appointment the night before I went, since I went on a Tuesday

Bring a few friends with you. Not too many. Bring friends whose opinion you trust, who will also share their opinion and be thoughtful about this being a dress for you, not them

Have at least one person go to all the stores with you. For the sake of consistency

Sleep on any decision you might make

Ask if you can take pictures, and take pictures if allowed. Take notes otherwise, as soon as you get a chance. Otherwise things will blur. And you can’t always find your actual design online (I haven’t been able to find a pic of my dress online)

Try a variety of styles, go in with an open mind, you might be surprised as to what you like on your own body versus what you’ve seen elsewhere

At the same time, have an idea of what you might like. Consultants will ask you what you’re thinking, so be able to articulate your vision and style

If you’re not finding what you like, change tactics. I was lucky and tried on at the most 30 dresses, and the second one I ever tried on was the one I went back to

Something my Wise Big Sister Clarissa said afterwards, when I was feeling a bit guilty for having spent more than I’d initially hoped (when I thought, Perhaps I’ll learn how to sew well and make myself a dress <— clearly delusional): “as long as you love it enough for the cost. everyone will value different things in weddings and budgets. not worth it if you go down the path of what it should cost, etc.”

Make the most of each trip and enjoy the social time you have with your friends!

Comments

I Said "YES" to the Dress

(Photo from nydailynews.com, click on the pic for a fun flashback to the wedding dress photo shoot from the Sex and the City movie. So my experience wasn’t quite like that, but I had my own girls with me; oh, and it was real.)

Soon after Joe and I got engaged back in September last year, people began asking me about our plans for the wedding. And, often, specifically, if I’d gotten a dress yet. To be perfectly honest, a dress was the furthest thing from my mind. There are many aspects of the wedding about which I am very excited, and first and foremost I wanted to plan the event, the gathering, the party, the coming together of friends and family. What I wear to said gathering seemed to be irrelevant. As with proms, graduations, dinner dances etc. in the past, my outfits are often picked randomly on the day before rather than carefully planned over the course of preceding weeks, let alone months. (I tried to find pictures to prove this often unfortunate and embarrassing tactic, but alas, I couldn’t find any old pictures on this computer.)

Then winter arrived. I am loathe to go shopping and have to deal with the taking off and putting back on of shoes, tops, pants, and socks to begin with. When it’s cold outside? Fuggedaboutit! (What, I’m a NYer now. For now.) The LAST thing I want to do when it’s cold out is to remove a single layer of clothing, let alone strip down to my skivvies and try on yards and yards and yards of fabric. Plus, all I seem to do in the winter is to eat and go into hibernation mode; so I’m not exactly fond or proud of my physique in these months.

Now that I’ve moved to New York, and now that we’re down to being 6 months away from the wedding date (!!!) and encouraged by lovely warm hints of spring in the past weeks, I finally decided to commence The Hunt.

Where better than to find a dress than NYC? First, Miriam, Erica and I went to Kleinfeld’s. Where they have 1700 dresses. Where they film the show “Say Yes to the Dress,” (which I’ve never seen but my sis Bea enjoys). Where they don’t allow pics (or “sketches”) until you buy the dress. Where there are dozens of little fitting rooms and dozens more consultants dressed in their black suits. Where my poor friends were subjected to my stripping down to my undies <2 feet from them. Where our hair stood on end, partially from the static electricity generated by clawing through rows and rows of dresses encased in plastic bags, hung in a room full of racks. Where, for the first 20 minutes we looked at each other with wide eyes and raised eyebrows, mouthing: “really?!” Where we eventually did find some lovely dresses after the consultant finally seemed to hear what I was trying to describe. Where I recommend going on a weekday, not a weekend. Definitely a good place to see many gowns, rather an overwhelming yet entertaining experience. Plus, if you’re more interesting than myself, you may get on TV!

The next day we went to a lovely, lovely salon, Gabriella’s. Relatively new (open about 1.5 years) and run by Gabriella herself, Bea, Miriam and I felt completely at ease and relaxed in her bright, airy and comfortable space in the meatpacking district. I tried on a dozen different dresses, and liked most of them. There were fewer dresses here than at Kleinfeld’s, but more seemed to be plausible options. Gabriella is attentive, fun, thoughtful and knowledgeable. The dressing rooms are large and Bea and Miriam were able to relax on a couch and look through magazines and photo albums as I changed. We liked several dresses I tried on. I really wish I’d found The One at Gabriella’s! But I’m glad we went.

Finally, yesterday we went to Pronovias’ flagship store near 5th Ave. The building is impressive, modern and well appointed.

We had a good little group this morning. My cousin Cynthia and her boyfriend Harsha are visiting from Houston. We sent poor Harsha off to wander around on his own for a while, so that Cynthia could join in on the girly fun. Bea, Miriam and Erica once more took time out of their days to help me. (Thank you!!!!!!)

I tried on several dresses, and found a few good options again. Our consultant Karolina was friendly and helpful. And several of the dresses were surprisingly affordable, given the quality of the design and the fanciness of the salon! I may have to head back there with my mom for their entire floor of Mother-of-the-Bride selections! While we were there, we overheard a girl next to us who was there on her own say she’d tried on more than 100 dresses. “Well, this one isn’t the most horrific one I’ve tried on,” she told her consultant at one point. Sadly, I think her quest continued beyond yesterday.

The second dress I’d tried on at Kleinfeld (and ever!) was one Miriam, Erica and I all really loved. I wanted Bea to see it as well. So we headed back there to try it on again. Making appointments for the weekends are near impossible, I’ve heard. But even though this was a Friday, if you go back for just one dress you don’t have to make an appointment. We did end up waiting quite a while. But at least Bea to go see several familiar faces from Say Yes to the Dress episodes while we waited. And there always seems to be good people watching at Kleinfeld.

With approval from Miriam, Erica and Bea, I put down a deposit on this dress. And finally got to take some pictures! Here’s a good one:

Ah! But you don’t get to see the dress yet. A certain lovely, fully technology-enabled fiancé does keep track of my antics on this blog. So I can’t post any actual pictures of the dress. I did enjoy playing with the little blemish remover in iPhoto. Funny that my wedding dress is the big blemish in this pic :)

The best part of wedding dress shopping? Grabbing many a glass of wine and yummy snack with my girls after each excursion. Thank you girls so much!!! And yes, I’m really looking forward to wearing this dress in October. And I’m pretty excited to have that big To Do checked off. Now when people ask me if I’ve found my dress I can smile and say: “yup.”

Comments

Temmaland No More

Quick update before I head to bed. In case any of you were wondering, and I know all 2 of you out there reading this blog have probably already been updated in person or via email or the phone… but, all seems to be well again in the world of the Shen-Bergeron felines. It took a little less than a week… but the growling, hissing and angriness have ended. Hallelujah!! As amusing as it is to see a tiny 7lb cat think she’s tough and emit bizarre growling sounds, it was getting to be irritating.

Everyone is friends again. Phew!

“Home” being our NYC apartment, that is. Tonight I decided that it was time I tried out our little kitchen here in NYC. Those of you who know Joe must also know that he is an excellent cook. Joe’s the type of cook who whips things together based on what’s in the pantry or what he’s thought up on his own. It’s always delicious. His cooking prowess is something anyone would envy, but it has not been good for a) my waistline and b) my cooking skills.

I used to cook before I met Joe. I can’t quite recall specifics about what I made back then, but I am capable of putting a meal on the table. It often takes longer than necessary, the kitchen looks like a hurricane has hit afterwards, and I have to follow recipes quite closely rather than thinking things up on my own. Then I met Joe and never had to cook. I sous chef here and there, but Joe does it so well, with such flair and genuine enjoyment, so I leave it to him, more of than not. I bake, mostly because I love sweets. And so we have a good partnership going on: Joe cooks, I bake. Joe is also very good at baking and making desserts, but he’s tried to keep that skill under wraps so as not to discourage me completely in the kitchen.

Since I’m currently enjoying the life of a lady of leisure, however, I’ve decided I need to contribute more to our nourishment. This evening I ventured over to the Whole Foods Market on the Upper West Side. It’s a FANTASTIC place and only a few blocks away - hooray!

I picked up some basic ingredients to build upon the pantry warming started by Miriam.

And yeah, that’s a can of delicious “Whipped Topping” you spy there. Don’t judge. We were reminded of its existence, brilliance and deliciousness the other night at our friends Erica and Ben’s (and our favorite dog Bodhi’s, of course) place. Strawberries? Fruit. Strawberries + Whipped Topping? Dessert. What’s not to love?

Dinner was a simple meal of salmon with a teriyaki glaze, accompanied by a simple Chinese (aka Napa) cabbage and shiitake mushroom stir fry.

The veggies look a tad wilty here. (I’m no food photographer. My friend Julian, however, is. If you want to marvel at his (food & general photography) skills and drool a whole lot on your keyboard, visit his blog DJjewelz.com You’ll learn about some fantastic restaurants in LA!) The teriyaki sauce was a bit too salty for my liking, but all in all, it was edible. The recipe came from my new favorite cookbook, Cooking for Two. No fault of theirs for anything tasting less than delicious - I’ll blame my rusty culinary skills. I briefly review the cookbook separately here.

We opened up a bottle of Rose from our favorite California winery Breggo to celebrate the milestone meal.

Cheers!

Comments

Cooking For Two

I really like this new cookbook! It’s just what I need as a safety blanket as I reacquaint myself with the art of preparing meals. That it features recipes tailored specifically for two is a huge plus - no more figuring out how to scale down recipes that ask for only one egg, for example.

Compiled by the folks from America’s Test Kitchen (they’re also the folks behind Cooks Illustrated magazine), the book, like their TV show, (which Joe regularly DVRs and relaxes to in the evening), is a handy dandy little compilation of information, if not a glitzy, sexy food show.

The cookbook features straightforward recipes with a little story on how they came about to each specific formulation. I like that the cookbook has some very basic dishes, along with some fancier ones, so that you’re not just preparing mac and cheese for two, or salads for two.

My favorite features, though, are the “Notes from the Test Kitchen” and the “Use it Up” boxes. Just like they do on the TV show, they talk about tools and ingredients they’ve found to work the best in the “Notes from the Test Kitchen” sections. They try out different cuts, grinds, brands and methods and let you know what they like and don’t like. It’s not called “America’s Test Kitchen” for nothing.

For example, how many of you weren’t positive about how to prepare lobster and easily extricate the flesh? For many of the silly questions we might be afraid of asking, there’s a neat little explanation, with pictures! Great for beginners or slightly intimidated cooks.

And for those times when you have a small amount of a random ingredient left over, they have handy dandy little “Use it Up” boxes, with suggested recipes for the orphaned ingredients.

All in all, a great cookbook that is informative to read and acts as a nice little tutor in the kitchen.

It’s apparently going to be a yearly thing, and the 2010 book is out already, but I wonder how much new information they can present each year!

Comments

Pantry Warming

One of the major perks of, and dare I say reason for our stint in NYC is being able to hang out with my dear friend Miriam. You’ve met Miriam before, when she was slaving away over engagement party invitations, here. Miriam and I have known each other since we were hysterical teenagers attending the 7th grade at Taipei American School. We’ve grown up a bit since then, but still enjoy the occasional bout of histrionics together. Life is just more fun when exclaimed over with a wonderful friend.

Miriam brought over a thoughtful gift the other day. She called it a “pantry warming gift,” which I think is a wonderfully warm and yummy thing. Quinoa - the magical, gluten-free grain! Cous cous, delicious Guinness chocolate cake (Joe and I definitely had a few forkfights over these yummies), and a little bag of teas. Life is also more cozy over a cup of tea with a wonderful, thoughtful friend.

Comments

Temmaland

<strike>Welcome!</strike> Actually, you are NOT welcome.

I can’t quite recall if I’ve disclosed a dubious distinction that was, like all things good and bad in a relationship, initially mine, but has become ours. We have 3 cats. It’s a bit of a long story… short version is: I wanted two so that they wouldn’t be lonely when I was away. A friend ended up giving me hers, who was from the same litter, so now we have 3 cats from the same litter. This little fact about me was something that has caused many a raised eyebrow, much labeling of me, and, I heard after the fact, a plea from my mother to my older sister to stage an intervention with me. That was when I was single and living alone in a small house in a small town. With my three cats. I get why people were worried.

Along came Joe. Who had no cat allergies! And a willingness to let these furry little creatures into (and occasionally dominate) his life. He didn’t run away. To be fair, I told him right off the bat. Our initial meeting may have gone something like this: “Hi, I’m Geraldine. I have three cats.” Okay, not quite, but I’m pretty sure I let him know within the first 12 hours. I liked him; I had to be honest. You can bet my parents breathed a sigh of relief.

Fast forward almost 5 years and Joe has now had to endure moving the cats once from Massachusetts to California. And we’re doing it again going the other way now. This time, instead of subjecting my poor sis Bea to flying cross-country with one, (who has a stinky gland when he’s agitated. NOT pleasant.) I decided to make two trips in a week. Airlines only allow one pet per passenger, and often restrict to 2 the number of pets allowed per flight. The whole 3 cat problem presents itself in many permutations.

We decided I’d bring one lucky candidate to NYC first, deposit said candidate in our newly leased apartment, and then we’d return a week later with the other two. In the meantime, same loving sis Bea would keep the first cat company in the evenings in the scary new apartment and city. Who was to go first, then? We decided that Temma is the most independent and bounces back quickly from any travel-related trauma, of which we hoped there’d be none. (Ha.)

In the days leading up to our departure from Palo Alto, I felt sorry for Temma. She’s so small. And she enjoys playing with her siblings. Look at how pathetic she looks, all by her lonesome in the hallway of our Palo Alto place with her siblings just a few yards away!

How’d the trip go? Funny you should ask… Temma is a fiesty one. She’s very, very sweet, but she’s active and curious. Runs around the house looking busy a lot. Well, this turned out to be a disaster at the airport. Joe had her last time and he’s stronger and more firm with the cats. I think he had her well immobilized when we flew from BOS-SJC 3 years ago. This time, I didn’t get a good hold of her as I took her out of her bag at the security checkpoint. It was a terrified, terrifying, hitting, spitting, scratching biting black and white furball of fury. She got herself wrapped around the table of the security table and the leash and collar I had her one was choking her. What. A. Scene. I finally managed to grab her, received quite a few scratches and even a good bite for my efforts, and wrangled her back into her bag on the other side of the metal detector. Never again. The poor passenger in line behind me even sustained a scratch or two in his effort to help me. Thankfully he was an animal lover and not a litigious type. Temma hyperventilated the entire flight over.

And I felt horrible for her. Thankfully she seemed to be okay after an hour or so at the new apartment.

And she very much enjoyed having Bea stay with her while we were back in California retrieving the other two and packing up our stuff.

(What, climbing on people’s backs isn’t welcome cat behavior?)

I was very excited to reunite the cats so that Temma wouldn’t be alone any longer. When we got back to California I asked Joe if he thought Zoe and Teaj missed Temma. He looked at me and said: “They’re cats.” I was rather miffed. I knew he’d take back his anti-anthropomorphizing stance when he saw how happy they were to be reunited in New York.

The journey with Zoe and Teaj went far better than it had gone with Temma. Which isn’t saying much, but it actually did go very smoothly despite weather delays and a Noreaster welcoming us in NYC. We got back to the apartment late that night and set the two cat carriers down. Temma came over to sniff them. I unzipped one and out popped Teaj’s head. HISSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Apparently, in the short week since she’d left California, Temma has gotten used to being an only cat. And she seems to not know, or at least certainly not like her siblings anymore. For the first day we were all here, she’d growl and hiss every time she caught sight of the others. Not quite the happy reunion I’d had in mind. Perhaps Joe is right. They’re cats. They establish and defend their own territory.

She pretty much hid in this box for the first day or after we got here. Grumpy little chicken.

Three days into our stay, she’s at least able to be in the same room as them and sit near them. She still hisses and growls if she feels catches them looking at her for more than 3 seconds. It’s sloooowly getting better, I think… but I was definitely taken by surprise at this turn of events. She’s very happy that Joe and I are around, so it’s not a complete memory loss on her part… but perhaps she’s just developed a new, cool NYC attitude. And this apartment was hers for a week and is therefore her territory. Feline visitors are not welcome.

While we have unpacked our bags and begun to get organized, our kitchen is sadly untouched and unstocked. Despite my vow to Joe that we would try to minimize eating out and that I would retry my hand at cooking, so far the fantastic Italian, Peruvian, Thai, Ethiopian, Cuban-Chinese and Indian food nearby has proven too strong a draw. It’s our first week, that’s a good excuse, right?

Here is our quintessentially NYC fridge (except for the fact that it’s rather large):

But at least we have our priorities straight, as evidenced by the only food we’ve actually procured from a grocery store:

We’d post pics of all the sumptuous meals we’ve been enjoying. But we don’t like to gloat. ;)

At least our delay wasn’t dull!

(The ~foot of snow, snowbanks and relentless snowflakes are missing from this pic)

First, there were the folks at the diner. The Martindale Chief Diner is a classic roadside diner. It’s one that I’ve driven by many times, but only stopped at once before. This is mostly because on our trips north from NYC to Williamstown on the Taconic, the diner appears in your rearview after you’ve driven past the exit. It also is one exit away from the exit for Williamstown, and that point you’re so tantalizingly close (aka 45 minutes; it’s all relative) to your final destination that it seems silly to stop there instead of, say, pulling up to Thai Garden on Spring Street and having that deliciously familiar, familiarly delicious pad thai. Which is what Joe and I do, 99% of the time.

Wait, where were we? Oh, diner! Yes, the Martindale Chief Diner is a good one. Complete with a friendly local waitress topping up your coffee, a gruff but ultimately helpful proprietor (he busted out his tractor to plow the lot; the 10” of snow that had accumulated in 2 hours rendered our car completely useless, despite the flat ground), local octagenarians who pull up in their big old boat-cars and dispense their opinions and observations freely (“Just what I needed to see in a snowstorm, sailors!” for example), and us random stranded visitors. We didn’t have any food while we were there, but we heard it was good. Apparently the fried cheesecake is to die for (literally, dare I say?) - it sure disappeared quickly when someone ordered it.

Navy Guys

There were two navy guys in their pea coats having a smoke outside when we pulled up to the diner. I didn’t notice the shiny patent leather shoes in my hurry to get out of the snow, but when they came in and took off their coats, we saw the dress whites. There were three of them, perched at the counter the whole time we were there. Very friendly, very sociable. They were, after all, recruiters for the navy. They were also stuck hoping to wait out the storm, having driven down from the Albany area. One guy spent a good hour or so reacquainting himself with the joys of coloring with a coloring book and some crayons they had at the diner. One guy lent us their cell phone, since he was able to get a tiny bit of cell reception. The other guy was moving to Florida next month, which I bet he’s relishing right about now. These were also the guys who pulled up in their white minivan to rescue us when we got stuck a few hours later.

(Again, much snow missing in this pic, taken from their website www.wunderbarandbistro.com/

Austrian Guy

We walked a few blocks from our hotel to find a place to get some food that rather miserable evening. An establishment called “Wunder Bar,” (haha, get it? Wunderbar is German for wonderful) was still open and the menu had some good comfort food items on it (including Wiener Schnitzel!), so we wandered in. Turns out the owner, Imre, is an Austrian man, who emigrated to the US in the 1960s. He grew up in the district next to where I grew up in Vienna. We had fun chatting with him, and his friend…

German Guy

Karl showed up when we were having dinner and hung out at the bar chatting with the owner and the waitress. A rather portly fellow with a loud, friendly disposition.. both Karl and Imre were OUTRAGED when we explained how we had ended up stuck in their neck of the woods. Seeming to have adopted both this country and its famous litigiousness, there was much exclaiming of how we should sue Hertz. I love the accents, but it’s been forever tainted by the legacy of California’s current governor, particularly when tough talk is occurring: “I vood sue dem!”

Karl had arrived in Hudson after driving for many, many hours, bringing up a truckload of peanuts from the South. He then distributes these peanuts to bars and restaurants in upstate New York. He also owns a German foods import business, and a German butcher shop. The Alpine Meat and Sausage House, as well as Karl’s Butcher Shop, BBQ & Grill. Karl promised he’d help me source Kinderüberraschungseir Adventkalendars for me this November (my sisters will be very lucky and very happy - they were big fans of this the last time I hand-delivered some from Austria). He also is vying to cater part of our wedding weekend. An entire roast pig, anyone? I know there are many in our party who would be quite happy about this. Joe and I told Karl we’d go and find him up in Schoharie NY and check out the goods. Yum!

Both guys felt quite bad for us, after hearing the sob story of the day. Imre offered to drive us to Albany the next day since he was headed up there anyway. Karl ran out to his truck and returned with two packs of German salami - if we got stuck again, at least we wouldn’t starve to death!

This little snowbound adventure of ours has reminded us of/taught us a few things.

If you’re a mom, specifically one of ours, please stop reading.

Or… read the following knowing that we are usually very trustworthy, prudent, responsible beings. And please don’t worry - we learn lessons every day and are now better equipped to go about the world in a(n even more) safe and responsible manner.

1) ALWAYS CHECK TIRE TREAD ON RENTAL CARS

Okay, so call us naive… but we didn’t think that rental cars, particularly from non-rent-a-wreck, non-super-budget/economy agencies such as HERTZ would give us tires on which you can barely drive. C’mon, we’re a part of your Number 1 Gold Club status thingy. Joe and I are not the world’s most paranoid inhabitants, but we do common sense things like check the car thoroughly for body damage, make sure the gas is actually full etc. But thoroughly examine the tires? Those cars are typically brand new, aren’t they?

WELL!

As we learned the hard way, rental car companies don’t particularly worry about your safety. We picked up this car in Manhattan on Sunday evening. They had upgraded us, they told us! From an economy to a mid-size car, lucky us! This Mazda 6 felt as though it had no suspension as we were bumping along the road to Williamstown, but all seemed to be fine the first day. Yesterday, as we began to drive back down to NYC, it became painfully obvious that the tires weren’t faring so well. Put another way, they were basically completely bald in many places.

What did we learn? CHECK YOUR TIRE TREAD. Oh, and there’s an easy way to tell if tire tread is still passable. Per law, there should be at least 2/32nds (aka 1/16th) of an inch worth of tread. Lacking a tire gauge? Use coins. This handy site gives you ways of estimating using various US coins. Lincon’s full head of hair should NOT be completely visible if you’re using a penny.

Let’s put our little rental car to the test, shall we?

Need a closer look?

What do you think? Pass or Fail? I think: FAIL!!!

Alright, fine. Let’s look at the other side…

Again… hmm… NOPE!!!!!

Yes, some tread on the side has apparently absorbed some muck, but should tires look like this, once they’ve been rotated out for a proper look? And by “this,” I mean like a baby’s bottom? Smooth and unblemished?

Yeah… I think NOT.

Grrrrrrrr… if I ever am feeling very calm and peaceful, I will just come and look at these pictures and reboil my blood. Thanks, Hertz, thanks a whole lot.

However!! Lesson number 2… for now…

2) Withhold Judgment

The car was no longer safe to drive, as we could painfully tell. So we stopped driving. And had it towed to the nearest yard… and have paid them to tow the car to the nearest Hertz when the weather clears.

So. We haven’t yet completely taken care of this issue with Hertz. Let’s take some bets… will they handle this issue with grace and an eye toward customer service? Or will they attempt to charge us for extra days and a drop off location different than we’d originally intended? I will keep you posted but I hope, for the sake of the eardrums of the person on the other end of the phone when we call, that they opt for attitude number 1 versus 2. Because I have a few words I’d like to share with them. None of which I will currently share with you.

Speaking of Sailors… or at least swearing like one, as I am occasionally wont to do…

3) Befriend your navy

As I mentioned previously, we spent several hours at a roadside diner, stranded along with 3 navy guys. They were recruiting high schoolers in the surrounding area, and had driven down from the New York State capitol area (Albany, Saratoga & Schenectady, to be specific). Joe and I tend to be friendly types. We strike up conversations with a variety of people we encounter in our travels. Boy are we glad we made friends with these guys at the diner. One of them had cell service, so we were able to make a few vital phone calls during the many-houred wait. We made sure to buy them coffee as a thank you. We joked around a lot and chit-chatted for the afternoon. Then we shook hands and parted ways.

And then we got stuck. And then they drove by when we were stuck. And they stopped. And they made sure we got to a place from where we could fend for ourselves. Men in uniform, gotta love ‘em.

4) Pack a change of clothing

Any of you who know us, know that we travel CONSTANTLY. And we usually just pack a roll aboard suitcase. This time, however, we packed 6 suitcases since our United status allows us each to check 3 for free. Since we plan to move part of our lives to NYC for a few months, and we’ll have to bring a few felines along next time, we decided to bring over as much as we could this time. Late the night before we left, this is what our room looked like:

Lovely, eh?

My friend Gob was keeping me company as I packed… and believe it or not, I managed to get all this junk packed. There is a method to my madness. Gob reminded me to pack a change of clothing in my carry on. I usually only have carry on luggage and fly direct, so I have to admit this is not something I have been doing on a regular basis. Needless to say we missed our direct JFK-SFO flight last night. And have rerouted to leave from Albany. Now that we are sitting here delayed in Albany, and clearly will not be making our connection to SFO out of Chicago, I’m glad I heeded Gob’s advice this time.

5) Make lemonade out of lemons

I won’t lie, it was a stressful day yesterday. From the harrowing drive to the uncertainty about how we were going to deal with the car, retrieve our belongings, get back to California, change or flights… but really, in the end, it was okay since we were together. And here we were, cut off from all of our usual ways of engaging with the world (cell phones, family, friends, computers..) - but it meant we could just rest up and hang out with each other, no distractions. I think it was actually a good test for our relationship. Would we freak out and yell at each other, or would we try to make good decisions together and remind each other that we loved each other? I think we passed this test. (Unlike the car.)

6) CVS Sells Electronics aka Be Prepared

Even though they may not sell iPhone chargers, they might sell car chargers. And they might sell car-to-wall converters. Add those together, and you may be able tobring your phone back to life if you’re ever in a jam!

Testing out my recharged iPhone. The camera works. And I need a makeover.

Oh, and keep these handy doo-dads in your backpack or computer bag. My sister asked me the other day why I had so much stuff in my purse. While I don’t usually pack chargers, in this case I was glad I had extra disposable contacts (esp. if your fiancée is only *slightly* less blind than you are), a little bit of dental floss and some lotion. This was before we made it to CVS in the morning. Made our stay in the random hotel last night much more normal than it otherwise would have been.

7) Fluff!

Remember this stuff?? The large, messy jars of gooey white sweetness they had in the dining halls in college? We were reminded: it tastes good!! This morning we stopped by a small coffee shop in Hudson while we attempted to call various cab companies. They had PB&J as well as PB&Fluff sandwiches. I have to say: genius. Not everyday fare, but good sustenance while you’re out on the road.

And it makes Joe smile. Can’t ask for much more than that!

8) We heart small airports

If you’re going to get stuck at an airport, ALB is not a bad place to be. For one, free wi-fi! And also very friendly, empathetic United customers service agents. Some of whom I’ve seen for more than a decade now. Albany may not be the most happenin’ hotspot in the world, but the accessible, wired and comfortable airport is one of our favorites.

Bonus and related lesson 9) There are some lovely and interesting people out there

Navy guys, hotel proprietors, roadside diner waitresses, bar owners, German sausage & peanut distributors, United customer service agents (we love them, we really do, they have been very good to us many times)… we encountered a whole host of characters out there in the last 24 hours. And thoroughly enjoyed doing so! But that’s another blog…

For now, I will mosey on over to the gate, in hopes that we will be able to fly to Chicago tonight.

Comments

Home Is Where The Heart Is...

… so, New York City, Williamstown, Craryville NY, Hudson NY and now Albany International (oh yes, that one flight to Canada qualifies us!) Airport. Tonight: the Doubletree Hotel by Chicago O’Hare… and tomorrow, Palo Alto again, we hope!

Boy have we had an adventurous few days! Where do I begin? For those of you currently in the Northeast, you may be experiencing our own Snowpocalypse 2010, after having rolled eyes at the plight of the mid-Atlantic last week. Joe and I, silly, spoiled Californians that we are, have wandered right into the middle of the current <strike>shit</strike>snowstorm.

We flew into NYC late last Wednesday and drove up to Williamstown on Thursday after hunting for sublets for the day. We stayed 2 nights, and then came back to NYC and spent a lovely few days frolicking in the city, seeing friends, eating, etc. A potential home beckoned to us for a closer look in wtown again, so we decided to make a trip back up on Sunday, see the place Monday morning and drive down to JFK in time for our Monday evening flight.

That was before the snow hit. As we were blithely driving back towards the Taconic State Parkway Monday around noon, the snow started falling. As we got on the parkway, it got heavier and heavier… soon we were merely crawling along. Other cars were still able to drive along, but our crappy rental car soon croaked. We tried to get to the side of the parkway.. but for those of you who know the Taconic, it doesn’t really have shoulders. Curves, hills, deers, crossroads, cops aplenty. Shoulders, none. Oh, and cell reception? Ha!!

This was not great but okay for now since any cars on the road were merely crawling along in one lane. After 45 minutes of hoping that a plow would show up and make the roads driveable, a state trooper pulled up.

Trooper: “You guys stuck?”

Us: “Yup.”

(For those of you not into reading mini-novellas, you can stop here. This basically sums up the next 24 hours of the story…)

Trooper: “Okay, back up slowly…”

We never thought we’d be in a position where we had to follow instructions barked over a police megaphone, but I count ourselves as lucky in this case. So we proceeded to back down the hill, with his flashing lights protecting and guiding us to a flat place where we could u-turn and exit. Luckily we were right by a diner, so we pulled in there. More on our time at the Martindale Chief Diner another time.

We spent several hours waiting out the storm along with 3 navy guys who were recruiting in the area. Eventually, we had to leave. The diner was closing soon, and there was no cell reception there. We were told of a way around the first big hill on the local road, and a town a few miles down the street.

“Here goes nothing…”

The back road around the hill worked perfectly. But then another hill presented itself. Our hearts sank. That’s putting it mildly. Mind you, these were snowy roads and slight hills, but other cars (4WD or not) were still able to climb them slowly. Nope, not our POS rental car.

Poor Joe did his best to maneuver the car out of danger, but all we could do is “park” on an unplowed side drive at the bottom of the hill.

Out of imminent danger but without being able to move, with no cell reception… What now? Oh, I’m so glad we are dutiful taxpayers. Support the troops! Our navy friends, knights in shining armor, pulled up in their white steed/minivan. We jumped in and hitched a relatively harrowing ride to Hudson, NY. Though they were headed to Albany, we had to stay put to figure out how to rescue the car. No tow trucks were available, most were attending to an 18-car pileup elsewhere, and another, tragically fatal accident, we found out. So we trudged to a local hotel, the St. Charles, and got a room for the night, feeling pretty miserable.

But, as the evening unfolded, and through the stress of the next several hours with cell phone batteries dying and computers ditched back at the car, the one thing that I kept thinking was: I’m so glad we’re here together.

If Joe were out there alone and I had any inkling of how bad the weather was, I would have been beside myself with worry. FREAKING out, is probably a better description. If I was out there alone… well, I’m not sure I would’ve survived a mile on the Taconic. So… in the end, (now that I am clearly posting part 1 of the story safely from my computer and a working internet connection), we felt okay. And I was in some random, tiny snow-blanketed town, safely holding hands with Joe. Home is where the heart is.

The saga will continue, with many lessons learned, for those of you who want more snowy details…

For now, exhibit A of the culprit responsible for our adventures:

In fact, I’m posting this from my office computer; it’s a ploy to delay packing up my things and having to head home just yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to not having to set an alarm and rush to the office in the morning next week. But I am also very sad, because I love this company and my colleagues a whole lot. It’s been a stimulating, interesting, rewarding and challenging few years here, and aside from professional accomplishments, I have also made some very good friends.

But, since it’s the family business, I know that this isn’t goodbye. Just a change of state. We had cake today, and I received lovely flowers. M. came to help ease my transition. Here are some photos from today, and from fun times in the past…

Thanks, guys! I feel so blessed to have worked closely with colleagues I consider friends. And plan on following David’s advice to “never ever be a stranger.”

What does this mean for Joe and I? We’re heading to NYC next week to find a sublet.. we’ll bring the kitties over when we find a place and hang out there for a few months, and see where the tides bring us after that. Hopefully Williamstown by summertime!

And the good news for this blog is that my unconstrained days will now allow me to get back to posting regularly! Fingers crossed :)

We wanted to find a way to seal the envelopes in a way that would prevent recipients from having to use letter openers because of the way we lined the envelopes with fabric (more on that here). So we made stickers.

We made little stickers of the character 囍 - a ubiquitous presence at all Chinese weddings. It’s made up of two copies of the Chinese character for happiness 喜(xi, pronounced “shee”). I had carved a little rubber stamp (not freehand, aided by a backwards rubbing of the character I printed out) of the character.

We used the lucky color red and stamped them onto paper the same weight and color as the STDs, ran that through our trusty little Xyron machine to apply an adhesive to the back of the paper, (more on the Xyron here), sprinkled them with clear heat embossing powder…

Melted the powder down (you can see in this picture sections of powder beginning to melt)… (for more on heat embossing, check out this post.)

Cut them out with the help of an obliging Littlest Sister…

Trimmed them down with a handy corner rounder… (Chinese prefer things that are round for auspicious symbols)…

And behold, cute little custom-made stickers!

It’s the acronym, I can’t help it!) was choosing a font. Joe and I decided to splurge and purchase a font online. Among many interests in common (e.g. cornbread with kernels of corn, woodworking, cheesy 80s music), learning more about fonts is one of them. Joe’s probably more well-read than I about this, but we both think about it perhaps a tad more than your average Joe (haha) though less than my graphic designy friends, like Anna B. She lists some of her favorites on her and her husband’s très adorable blog. Check it out.

Anyway… Joe and I poked around online to find a font we both liked and stumbled upon one called “Dearest.” I’ve never purchased a font before, but this one, we both wanted… so it’s purchased and it’s our Official Wedding Font. Get used to it :)

It has two fun versions, one called “Script” and a super twirly fun version called “Swash.” Dearest - Swash! How cool is that?

What do you think?

And while we’re talking about fonts, here are some links with which to entertain yourself.

For a lighter diversion, font quizzes:

Just a few minutes of fun & procrastination!

http://cheeseorfont.mogrify.org/

http://mentalfloss.com/quiz/quiz.php?q=198

Slightly more intellectual font engagement/application:

If you have many several minutes to spare, here’s a fascinating article about the gradual phasing into Helvetica of American road signs.
