Now that our furniture has arrived, we get to slowly unpack. I can’t decide what I like less - packing or unpacking. Probably packing… at least with unpacking we get to take our time. We have piles of boxes like this in most rooms of the house. Fun.
But with the arrival of our things, a few firsts were enabled.
- First night on our own bed in the new house.
This was very much an upgrade. Here’s what we had before:
Though that picture is misleading. It shows an air mattress with air in it. A few hours into each night, there’d be very little air left in the leaky thing. This was not as much a problem for me as it was for Joe: he weighs more than I do and thus would hit the floor first, buoying me up for the next hour or two.
- First time playing on my childhood piano in about… gosh, close to 15 years?
- First moment of “oh no… did we do the right thing?” when the weather forecast told us the high today was in the mid 40s (that’s ~10 Celsius). And when we saw the little ice sprinklies coming down this morning. It’s MAY!!! :(
- First shrugging of the shoulders and saying: “New England weather…” so unpredictable! Our honeymoon period here is not over yet! Luckily our down jackets were nearby.
- First time using our kitchen
This was quite momentous for us. We had to thoroughly clean and salvage most of the appliances for our kitchen. Fridge, dishwasher, range… all came from various parts of our property (have I mentioned we own a duplex with a huge barn?)
- First meal at Home
If we look tired, it’s because we are. My first week of work was tiring! And Joe has been going nonstop lugging things around the house, from the barn to one side of the duplex, from one side of the duplex to the other, with trips to Home Depot in between appointments with cable guys, locksmiths, contractors etc.! We’re also looking extra glam in our hoodies… crawling into small spaces and scrubbing kitchen shelves will do that to ya! But we were happy to have a meal at home. And to have found various utensils, our candles and even our wine bottle opener by rummaging through a few of our boxes. Thank goodness for detailed labeling!
Oh, and this is the first post uploaded from Home. We’re online again. Phew!
