Visiting the Park McCullough House gave us hope that there are some indoors spaces in the area that can accommodate a party the size we’re anticipating. So that was encouraging. But on the drive down, I didn’t feel like it was quite right. I decided to call some of the places we’d written off because of pesky things like policies and rules. So I called MASSMoCA. Remember, they say they do not host private events during the summer or the month of October because performing arts events are scheduled for every Friday and Saturday of these peak months.
What about Sunday, I asked.
You know those dramatic moments in movies where everything pauses and you don’t know if the music is going to go frantic melancholy Wagneresque or the “aahhhhh!!!” angels singing will erupt? Yeah…
I’m your eternal optimist and pessimist rolled into one. I prepare myself for the worst with things I want, telling myself that things can’t work out perfectly all the time, and even begin to list the reasons why the alternative result is better than my first-choice. Don’t tell me there aren’t some of you who don’t also do that! I probably even take myself out of the game before competing at times. Yet I also feel like I’m an optimist. The optimist side is the part of me that plunges head first into something big telling myself that it will all work out. For example with the freezing weather in Williamstown this time we visited. As we were standing on the gorgeous lookout at the top of Sheep Hill when I dragged my parents and sister there at sunset on Thursday, I assured my mom that since it was this freezing cold this time of year, it won’t be next year. Where’s the logic in that? Well, it was 20 degrees colder than usual for that day. So I’m keeping fingers and toes crossed for it not being abnormally freezing two years in a row.
So back to that moment on the phone, driving down Route 7 from Bennington to Williamstown. I was surprised someone at MASSMoCA even answered since it was late in the day. The Special Events planner was very sweet and not at all dismissive when I ventured towards the question. She said a Sunday could conceivably work, and that she’d check with the Performing Arts department to see if they had Sunday, October 10 (Columbus Day weekend next year) available and get back to me. She answered a few more questions for me regarding use of the facilities, additional fees, rental equipment needed, catering suggestions etc.
On Friday I received an email from Rebecca at MASSMoCA bright and early: Sunday, October 10, 2010 is a go. MASSMoCA would certainly be a nice, indoor spot! We’ll still have to weigh various pros and cons, but at least now we have a few options.
So, how about it, folks? Joe and I sat out while 08-08-08 and 09-09-09 occurred. Who woulda thunk we’d jump on that numbers bandwagon and go for 10-10-10? Would you attend a Sunday evening wedding if the next day was a pseudo (definitely questionable re: what’s being celebrated) holiday? I know not everyone gets that Monday off, but perhaps folks could think about taking Monday rather than your usual Friday off for a wedding-that-requires-travel.
